Spotify partners with Substack to expand podcast content

Following Google’s discontinuation of its dedicated Podcasts app, Spotify has announced a partnership with Substack. This alliance allows Substack podcast creators worldwide to distribute their free and premium content on Spotify for the first time. Substack podcast creators can now choose to include Spotify as a distribution medium, while retaining control over their subscriber base, content, and revenue streams. Listeners also have the ability to connect their Substack and Spotify accounts for seamless access to content across both platforms.

Substack joins Spotify’s open access platform for premium subscriptions

Substack has become the latest content provider to join Spotify’s Open Access platform for premium subscriptions. This integration is facilitated by Spotify’s Open Access API, which enables podcast creators to reach Spotify’s over 600 million monthly active users while maintaining control over their subscriptions and content. Stephanie Shaer, Spotify’s Head of Partner Strategy and Business Development, emphasized that this feature aims to help creators expand their listener base without sacrificing their direct relationships with subscribers.

Popular podcasts to debut on Spotify through Substack partnership

The collaboration between Spotify and Substack introduces several popular podcasts to Spotify, including “Rich Text,” “Split Zone Duo,” and “Culture Study.” Emma Gray, co-host of “Rich Text,” expressed her excitement about offering their community broader access to their podcast via Spotify. Similarly, Alex Kirshner from “Split Zone Duo” and Anne Helen Petersen from “Culture Study” highlighted the benefits of making exclusive subscriber content more accessible on Spotify.
